Text Neck: How Your Phone Loads Your Spine and Drags Down Your Upper Back
August 8, 2026
You look up from your phone after twenty minutes and your neck feels stiff, your upper back aches between the shoulder blades, and a dull pressure creeps up the base of your skull. You do this dozens of times a day. Your spine is keeping score. You have developed text neck.
This is not weakness. It is a loading problem. Your head is heavy, and the angle you hold it at decides how much weight your neck has to carry. Get the angle wrong for hours a day, and the whole upper chain starts to fail.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hall at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics has evaluated over 20,000 orthopedic patients. Fewer than 2% needed surgery. Posture-driven neck and upper-back pain is one of the most fixable patterns he sees.
The physics of your head
Your head weighs about a dozen pounds when it sits balanced over your shoulders. Tip it forward to look at a screen and the effective load climbs fast. At a steep angle it can feel like carrying the weight of a small child on the back of your neck. Your neck muscles hold that load all day, and they burn out.
When the head sits forward, the small guide-joints of the neck jam, the discs take uneven pressure, and the muscles between your shoulder blades stretch and weaken. Force stops transferring cleanly. Stiffness, aching, and headaches follow.
When it climbs into your head
The joints and nerves of the upper neck can refer pain straight into the skull. That is why hours on a phone can end in a headache that feels like it started behind your eyes. The source is several inches lower, in a neck that has been loaded wrong all day.
Why the usual fixes stall
Pain medications and NSAIDs quiet the ache while the loading pattern rolls on, and NSAIDs wear at cartilage over time. Steroid injections carry real risk and do nothing about posture. Surgery is almost never the answer for a mechanical loading problem. None of these change the angle your head lives at.
How CNS unloads the neck
BOOK YOUR EXAM Treatment starts by restoring clean motion. Chiropractic adjustments free the jammed neck joints and ease pressure on irritated nerves. Low-level laser therapy lowers inflammation and speeds recovery in overworked tissue, drug-free and painless. Clinical exercise rebuilds the deep neck and upper-back strength that holds your head where it belongs. See how we treat the neck and the whole low back and neck chain.
Diagnosis first
Not all neck pain is text neck. A thorough exam separates a posture-loading problem from a disc or nerve issue that needs a different plan. One CNS patient regained feeling in her fingers and range in her neck through decompression, exercise, and PRP after being told surgery was her only path. The exam is what pointed her the right way.
