Summer Heat Increases Low Back and Joint Pain?
May 19, 2023
If you are dealing with chronic or acute low back pain, the summer season can be particularly harsh on your spine. With warmer and more humid weather increasing, so is the possibility of unwanted flare-ups in low back pain. Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics and Dr. Hall have some tips for preventing unwanted pain for the season.
While many associate aches and pains with cooler temperatures, warmer weather can also cause an increase in pain-causing inflammation. This is because a sudden and drastic change in temperatures (cold fronts, stormy weather, etc) can lead to changes in barometric pressure which changes the way your tissues in your bones, muscles, and tendons contract. When the temperature becomes more consistent over time, your aches and pains should subside.
Aiding Weather-Related Low Back Pain and Joint Pain
There are plenty of ways that you can minimize aches and pains as the weather shifts and you wait for the weather to level out for the summer. Try some of these tips to help minimize your discomfort:
- Apply ice or a child compress to your back to minimize inflammation.
- Make sure to warm-up before exercise to reduce muscle tension and stiffness.
- Stay hydrated to fight inflammation overall.
- Stay active with low-impact activities like swimming and yoga.
