Successfully Living with Knee Arthritis
January 14, 2022
The most common type of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis which affects millions of Americans and is one of the top 3 musculoskeletal reasons for a visit to your physician. Despite this, the really good news is- surgery is not the first step nor is it required in most cases. At Chattanooga Non-surgical Orthopedics we have several non-surgical ways to manage the symptoms associated with knee arthritis and ways to get at the heart of the matter to ease pain and restore motion. Of course, we aren’t able to “cure” arthritis but our programs can help you improve your overall knee function.
Keys to living successfully with knee arthritis:
- Keep a healthy weight. Work on getting your body mass index under 30 but above 18.5. Less weight on the knees, the less stress on the joint.
- Engage in low-impact exercises such as swimming or cycling. At Chattanooga Non-surgical Orthopedics we offer online strengthening programs designed specifically for our patients. Ask about this at your next appointment.
- Some braces may help if your knee is unstable. We can assess if this is a worthwhile decision for you.
- Use assistive devices such as a walking stick, cane, or walker.
- Certain injections for the knee may also provide some relief through our Regenerative Medicine program.
