Sleeping Better with Lower Back Pain
February 7, 2025

Living with chronic lower back pain can be exhausting, and difficulty sleeping can make it even worse. The good news is that there are steps you can take to improve your sleep quality and reduce back pain. At Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics, our team is dedicated to helping patients find relief from chronic pain and improve their overall well-being.
Tips for Sleeping Better with Lower Back Pain
-
Find the Right Sleeping Position: There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but some positions may be more comfortable for people with lower back pain than others.
- Fetal Position: This position, where you lie on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chest, can help to take pressure off of an irritated disc.
- On Your Back: If you prefer to sleep on your back, place a small pillow under your knees to support your lower back. You can also place a pillow under your head that keeps your spine in a neutral alignment.
- On Your Side: Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees can help to keep your spine aligned. Try to avoid sleeping on the same side every night.
-
Invest in a Quality Mattress: A good mattress can provide the support your back needs to sleep comfortably. If your mattress is sagging or old, it’s time for a new one. When shopping for a mattress, spend at least 15 minutes lying on it to see if it provides good support for your lower back.
Additional Tips for Back Pain Relief
- Regular Exercise: Exercise can help to strengthen the muscles that support your back and improve your flexibility.
- Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can teach you exercises and stretches to help improve your back pain.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can put additional strain on your back.
