Sleeping, Back Pain, and the Common Causes – Part 1
July 10, 2020
Over the next few weeks, our IntegratedBlog will take a look at one of the most common causes of back pain issues- how you sleep.
Waking up sore in the morning is one of the most common back pain complaints among adults. Perhaps you’ve wondered why you have trouble getting comfortable at night or why you wake up feeling restless in the morning. When it comes to battling the discomfort of back pain, one major and misunderstood cause can be your mattress and/or your sleeping position.
Obviously, back pain is not to be taken lightly. At Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center, we take your pain very seriously. Back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide, which is why taking into consideration your mattress and sleeping positions are so important. Pain is experienced when ligaments are sprained, muscles strained, disks ruptured, or joints irritated. There are countless causes of back pain including, arthritis, poor posture, injury, obesity, and even stress. But your mattress may be a secret culprit as well.
You may not realize it, but a mattress is a healthcare product vital for optimum physical health. While we at Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center are not in the business of recommending mattresses, we do understand the quality of your mattress can directly impact the quality of your sleep, and there are a few common problems to note.
The truth is, If you are battling physical stresses from an unsupported mattress while we sleep then our bodies’ recuperative abilities are diminished. If you wake up with a stiffness that continually progresses, that’s a pretty good indication your mattress is contributing to your soreness. In any case, a mattress that promotes a healthy back starts with proper support- namely to your hips and your mid-section. In order to keep your spine in a neutral position, your mattress should not sag in the middle or it will move your spine out of optimum neutral alignment. So when shopping for a mattress, make sure you find one that supports your mid-section and has less likelihood to sag in the middle over time.
If you suspect your pain might be caused by your sleeping situation, give us a call and make an appointment. We’ll correct your spine misalignment and ease your pain so you can find yourself a more supportive mattress to keep the problem from returning.
Next week, we’ll look at how your sleeping position may be a further contributor to back pain and discuss the best and worst sleeping positions.
