Pregnancy and Postpartum Back Pain: Why It Happens and How to Recover
August 23, 2026
You are carrying your baby, or carrying your car seat, and a deep ache settles into your low back and the back of your pelvis. Standing up hurts. Rolling over in bed hurts. You were told this is just part of it. Some of it is. A lot of it is fixable.
Pregnancy changes how your body handles load, fast. Your center of gravity shifts forward, your joints loosen, and your core stretches. Force that used to travel cleanly through your pelvis now has weak points. The pain is your mechanics adjusting under real stress.
For over 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hall at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics has treated more than 20,000 orthopedic patients, including many mothers before and after delivery. Under 2% ever needed surgery. Gentle, drug-free care fits this season of life well.
What is happening in your pelvis
A hormone called relaxin loosens the ligaments of your pelvis to make room for delivery. Helpful for birth, hard on stability. The sacroiliac joints, where your spine meets your pelvis, can start to move too much and grind. Add a growing belly pulling your low back into a deeper curve, and the joints and muscles there work overtime.
After delivery, the belly is gone but the loose ligaments, stretched core, and changed movement patterns remain. That is why postpartum back and pelvic pain can outlast the pregnancy by months when nothing rebuilds the support.
Why the usual advice falls short
Waiting it out leaves an unstable pelvis to keep grinding. Pain medications are limited and unappealing during and after pregnancy, and NSAIDs erode cartilage over time. Steroid injections carry real risk. Surgery has no role here. What the joints need is stability and clean motion restored gently.
How CNS supports moms
BOOK YOUR EXAM Care is gentle and drug-free. Chiropractic adjustments restore alignment and calm an irritated SI joint. Clinical exercise rebuilds the deep core and glutes that stabilize the pelvis, especially after delivery. When ligaments stay loose, prolotherapy can trigger the body to tighten and stabilize them, and low-level laser therapy eases inflamed tissue without medication. Diagnosis first
Back pain, SI joint pain, and pelvic-girdle pain need different plans. A thorough exam tells them apart so care is safe and targeted for where you are in pregnancy or recovery. Every CNS plan begins with a careful evaluation before any treatment.
