Osteoporosis: Are You at Risk?

April 7, 2023

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes decreased bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, which increases the risk of fractures. It is considered a silent disease, meaning there are no other symptoms until a fracture occurs. The increased risk of fractures with osteoporosis can make you more susceptible to chronic low back pain and neck pain, knee pain, joint pain and overall disability.

Osteoporosis has several different risk factors, based on the following two categories: (1) Primary osteoporosis which occurs in those who are postmenopausal and deficient in estrogen, and (2) Secondary osteoporosis can be caused by age, certain diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, long-term use of medications like steroids, and lifestyle factors such as smoking.

If you have any of these risk factors, it’s important to talk to Dr. Jeff Hall and Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics about your risk for osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is most common in caucasians, women, and older adults. However, it is not necessarily just a women’s disease. It can and does affect both sexes and all races. The most important step for prevention of fractures is to strengthen and protect your joints and bones. This can be accomplished through lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and beginning a strength-training or Clinical Exercise training offered to our patients at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics as a part of our specialized treatment. In addition, we offer viscosupplementation, a proven technique, effective at significantly reducing pain or improving function in mild to moderate knee OA.

It is also important to follow Dr. Jeff Hall’s treatment plan and have regular diagnostics testing to help in predicting future fracture risk and assess your bone health.

If you are experiencing low back pain and neck pain, knee pain, and other joint pain, contact Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics today for an evaluation and immediate help!
