October is Health Literacy Month
October 9, 2020
Health Literacy Month is a time for us to promote the importance of understandable health information. It is our goal and desire that each of our patients at Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center learn about and understand the issues affecting them, how to prevent them, and how we can help your body heal.
Studies consistently show that a significant number of people have problems reading, understanding, and acting on health information, and there are a number of reasons why. For one thing, health information is inherently complex, and not all healthcare providers are skilled communicators. Additionally, patients bring a wide range of learning needs to the healthcare experience. Basic literacy skills, language, age, disability, cultural context, and emotional responses can all affect the way people receive and process information — and the way people process information, in turn, has a direct impact on health outcomes and cost.
So our goal at Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center is to create materials and communicate health information that is easy to read, understand, and use. And we treat every patient as though they were the only one; specific plans of action for specific needs and desired outcomes.
