Inactivity Leads to Serious Health Issues: Four Tips to Get and Keep Moving
August 14, 2020
It has been our rallying cry since we began Chattanooga Integrated Medicine Center – your body needs proper exercise in order to maintain optimal health. Scientific research and the benefits of working out are undeniable. Though everyone wants to be stronger, more fit, more mobile, realize lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels, and overall experience decreased potential risk of disease, we struggle to get moving.
Many would rather do just about anything other than hit the nature trail or treadmill. Lack of motivation is the basis of the problem. It is difficult to find reason to exert the higher energy needed for a workout. But the truth is, inactivity has scientifically proven to hasten disease and cause premature death- a reason that should shake us to the core. We need to get out there, even for a short time each day. Here are a few tips that may help:
Start Out Wearing Workout Clothes
Since many of us work at home during the Coronavirus pandemic, if at all possible, start your day out in workout apparel. You’ll feel more motivated to go for that walk, run, or do that workout. If that’s not an option, leave out some workout clothes when you dress each day so that changing is easier and less work in figuring out what to change into after a long day.
Don’t Forget the “Why”
Whether it was at a doctor’s prompting, or a decision to become a better you, you decided to start a fitness journey for a reason. Tap into that inspiration as you lace up your running shoes. Remember you won’t accomplish anything if you don’t overcome that urge to stay on your couch or in your easy chair.
Accountability is a Major Motivator
Find an accountability partner. A friend or family member with similar goals can be powerful. You’ll motivate each other to keep going (or just get started) when you’d much rather just hang out. Having someone who is relying on you while you depend on them will increase the likelihood of keeping up the workouts.
Explore A Wide Variety of Active Options
Not everyone wants to head to the gym. Fortunately, exercise can happen nearly anywhere. If the treadmill is boring to you, take a walk or bike around your neighborhood. If you hate lifting weights, use the strength of your own body by taking a yoga or Pilates class. If you enjoy dancing, join a Zumba or Dancercise class, or even spend time dancing alone at home to your favorite music. Any movement activity, as much as possible, is key.
No matter what you do to get active, make sure it’s something that you’ll enjoy and you’ll be more likely to commit to it long-term.
