Hip Stress Fractures and Potential Permanent Damage
June 10, 2022
A stress fracture usually occurs when a bone is subjected to repetitive strain or impact, often as a result of sports or exercise. For example, when a runner’s foot strikes concrete or other hard surfaces, the vibration from that impact travels up the leg to the hip. Over time, the hip bone can weaken and develop tiny fractures. Continued impacts can prevent these fractures from healing, and they often increase in number. This causes pain in the groin and hip area, and in some cases, the hip bone becomes displaced, misaligned in the socket.
Hip stress fractures are most common among long-distance runners and other athletes who experience heavy, repeated leg impacts. Particularly those who ignore the warning signs of pain and continue again and again. In addition, some people with low body mass (BMI) or inadequate nutrition during a training program are at higher risk for hip stress fractures. Pain ignored altogether and without seeking treatment could result in permanent damage. Therefore, when there is constant pain in the groin or front of the hip, it is important to consult Dr. Hall at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics for a full evaluation.
The diagnosis of a hip stress fracture will be confirmed by an X-ray as well as a complete evaluation of symptoms and movement. Treatment will depend on the severity of the fracture. In cases of mild pain and no major mobility impairment, clinical exercise, possibly crutches and/or a change in physical activity or nutrition may be recommended.
Pain in the hip or groin should not be ignored, especially if you are regularly engaged in rigorous physical activity. If the pain does not cease after rest, or pain recurs after putting weight or stress on the hip, it is time to make an appointment! Don’t let a little pain become a major ordeal- call us today!
