Hip Labral Tears: The Hidden Cause of Hip and Groin Pain
July 30, 2026
Deep, aching hip pain that sometimes radiates into the groin — especially pain that flares with twisting, pivoting, or prolonged sitting — is one of the more frequently missed diagnoses in orthopedic medicine. Many patients spend months being treated for generic “hip pain” or hip flexor strain before anyone identifies a hip labral tear as the actual cause. At Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics, Dr. Jeff Hall specifically evaluates for this often-overlooked diagnosis.
What Is the Labrum, and Why Does a Tear Matter?
The labrum is a ring of cartilage lining the socket of your hip joint, deepening the socket and helping the ball-and-socket joint move smoothly while staying stable. When the labrum tears — from repetitive twisting motion, structural hip abnormalities, sports impact, or gradual degeneration — the joint loses some of that stability and cushioning, which can produce pain, a catching or locking sensation, and a feeling of the hip “giving way.”
Labral tears are especially common in:
- Athletes in rotational sports — soccer, golf, hockey, dance, and running
- Patients with structural hip conditions, such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
- Anyone with a history of hip trauma or dislocation
- Middle-aged and older adults, where degenerative labral wear can develop gradually without a specific injury
Why It’s So Often Missed
Labral tear pain frequently overlaps with hip flexor strain, hip bursitis (which we’ve covered specific exercises for), and lower back referred pain — meaning patients are often treated for the wrong condition entirely before a labral tear is ever considered. A precise hip exam, including specific provocative testing, is what actually differentiates a labral tear from these other common hip pain sources.
How CNS Orthopedics Treats Hip Labral Tears
Stem Cell Therapy — For labral tissue damage, stem cell injections support the joint’s ability to repair cartilage-adjacent structures, an approach that has helped CNS Orthopedics patients avoid the surgical labral repair they were originally told they needed.
PRP Therapy — Often combined with stem cell therapy, PRP delivers concentrated growth factors to accelerate healing within the joint capsule and surrounding tissue.
Prolotherapy — Strengthens the ligaments supporting the hip joint, improving overall joint stability and reducing the abnormal motion that can aggravate a labral tear.
Clinical Exercise — Targeted hip stabilization and mobility work is essential both for recovery and for correcting the movement patterns that may have contributed to the tear in the first place.
One CNS Orthopedics patient — a young athlete told by two separate doctors that her torn labrum required surgery — instead received stem cell injections and PRP, and was back running within eight weeks, fully healed.
Persistent Hip or Groin Pain Deserves a Closer Look
If hip pain has been vaguely diagnosed as a “strain” that never quite resolves, a labral tear may be the piece that’s been missed.
