Desk Job Back Pain: Why Sitting All Day Overloads Your Lumbar Spine
August 17, 2026
You get up from your desk at five and your low back is stiff and hot, like it has been holding something all day. It has. You barely moved for eight hours, and your spine paid the bill.
Sitting feels like rest, but for your lumbar spine it is work. A seated posture can press harder on your discs than standing does. Hold that pressure for a full workday and the whole lower chain gets cranky.
For over 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hall at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics has evaluated more than 20,000 orthopedic patients, many of them desk workers across the Tennessee Valley. Under 2% ever needed surgery. Sitting-driven back pain responds well once you change how load moves through the spine.
What sitting does to your spine
When you sit, your hips fold and your pelvis tends to roll back. That flattens the natural curve of your low back and shifts load onto the front of your discs. Your hip flexors shorten, your glutes switch off, and the muscles that should stabilize your spine go quiet. Joints need motion to pump the fluid that lubricates them, and you just took the motion away.
Over months, this pattern stiffens joints, dries out discs, and leaves the muscles that guard your spine weak and slow to fire. The back you stand up with at five is not injured so much as under-loaded in all the wrong ways.
Why a standing desk alone is not the answer
Swapping to a standing desk trades one static posture for another. The fix is not a gadget. Pain medications and NSAIDs mask the ache while the pattern rolls on, and NSAIDs erode cartilage over time. Steroid injections carry real risk for what is a movement problem. Surgery has no place here. The spine wants motion and balanced strength, not another thing to hold still against.
How CNS resets a desk-bound spine
BOOK YOUR EXAM Treatment restores what sitting takes away. Chiropractic adjustments free the stiff lumbar joints so they move and lubricate again. Clinical exercise wakes up the glutes and deep core so your spine has real support at your desk. Low-level laser therapy calms inflamed tissue drug-free. See how we treat the low back, and the connected neck that suffers from the same slump.
Diagnosis first
Desk pain and disc pain can feel similar. A thorough exam tells them apart before any treatment. Every CNS plan starts with an ortho-neurological exam and imaging when needed, so your plan fits your spine and not a generic office-ergonomics checklist.
