Deadlift Back Pain: The Real Mechanical Reasons Heavy Lifting Hurts Your Spine
August 14, 2026
You set up for a heavy pull, brace, and rip it off the floor. Something in your low back bites at lockout. Now every rep, every hinge, even bending to grab your gym bag reminds you it is there. You train hard. This feels unfair.
Your spine is the hub that routes force between your upper and lower body. Every deadlift sends huge load straight through it. When one link in that chain is restricted or weak, force leaks, and the low back ends up absorbing what the hips and core should have handled.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hall at Chattanooga Non-Surgical Orthopedics has worked with over 20,000 orthopedic patients, from weekend lifters to serious athletes. Under 2% ever needed surgery. Lifting-related back pain is a bottleneck, and bottlenecks can be cleared.
Where the force actually leaks
A clean deadlift transfers load from the floor, through the hips, up a braced spine, and out. If your hips do not hinge well, your lumbar spine bends to make up the range, and the discs and joints take load they were not built to carry at that angle. If your core cannot hold pressure, the spine loses its brace mid-lift and the segment shears.
The result can be an irritated disc, a jammed facet joint, or a strained ligament. Each one changes how the muscle fires. The muscle guards, power drops, and your lift stalls not because you are weak, but because the signal is getting choked.
Why the standard fix keeps you sidelined
Pain medications and NSAIDs let you keep loading a spine that is asking you to stop, and NSAIDs wear at cartilage over time. Steroid injections carry real risk and never fix the faulty mechanics. Surgery is a heavy trade with long recovery and no guarantee of a stronger lift. None of them rebuild the pattern that failed.
How CNS gets you back under load
BOOK YOUR EXAM Recovery is built around movement, not rest alone. Clinical exercise retrains the hip hinge and rebuilds the core brace so force stops leaking into your spine. Spinal decompression relieves pressure on an irritated disc by creating negative pressure that helps it rehydrate. Chiropractic adjustments free a jammed segment so the joint moves under load again. Comprehensive diagnostics pinpoint the failed link first. This is how we get the low back back to the sport of life.
Diagnosis first
Rushing back under the bar without knowing what failed is how a strain becomes a chronic problem. Every CNS plan starts with an ortho-neurological exam and imaging so you load again only when the structure is ready. One athlete-minded patient avoided the surgery two doctors recommended, healed with PRP and decompression, and returned to court sports.
